A Man and His Presidents: The Political Odyssey of William F. Buckley, Jr.
Alvin S. Felzenberg
William F. Buckley Jr. is widely regarded as the most influential American conservative writer, activist, and organizer in the postwar era. In this nuanced biography, Alvin Felzenberg sheds light on little-known aspects of Buckley’s career, including his role as back-channel adviser to policy makers, his intimate friendship with both Ronald and Nancy Reagan, his changing views on civil rights, and his break with George W. Bush over the Iraq War.
Felzenberg demonstrates how Buckley conveyed his message across multiple platforms and drew upon his vast network of contacts, his personal charm, his extraordinary wit, and his celebrity status to move the center of political gravity in the United States closer to his point of view. Including many rarely seen photographs, this account of one of the most compelling personalities of American politics will appeal to conservatives, liberals, and even the apolitical.
Alvin S. Felzenberg, Delta Zeta (Rutgers State University Of New Jersey – Newark) 1971 served in two presidential administrations and was principal spokesman for the 9/11 Commission. He teaches at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication and is the author of The Leaders We Deserved (and a Few We Didn’t). He lives in Washington, DC.
President Carter: the White House Years
Stuart E. Eizenstat
Almost 40 years in the making, my book is finally here. PRESIDENT CARTER: The White House Years presents an intimate, first-hand comprehensive history of the Carter Administration, one of the most unappreciated, but most consequential and accomplished one-term presidencies in modern American history. As his Chief White House Domestic Policy Advisers, I had a front row seat in the challenges we faced during a turbulent time in the 1970s. My book’s authenticity is anchored in more than 5,000 pages of my own contemporaneous notes of every meeting and telephone conversation in which I participated, now archived in the Library of Congress, over 350 interviews of key officials in the Administration and experts outside, Republican and Democratic, and a trove of now declassified documents. It is a behind-the-scenes account of a president of high ethical standards. I have laced this major work of history with personal profiles, and anecdotes which make the narrative compelling reading. My book is not an apologia, but shows not only the impressive achievements, many of which benefited future presidents and the nation, not Carter, but also where he and those of us around him, myself included, failed.
