Psi (University of Alabama)

Faron A. Lewitt, 1997, was named the recipient of ZBT’s 2023 James E. Greer, Jr. Staff Award, celebrated on August 12 at 2023 International Convention in New York City. Brother Lewitt was widely involved across the fraternity industry for more than 25 years, including as a past undergraduate member of the Supreme Council and Chapter Secretary. For 18 years, he was Chief Executive Officer of the Zeta Beta Tau Foundation. In 2020, he was recognized by the Foundation for Fraternal Excellence as the William D. Jenkins Award for Outstanding Foundation Professional as well.

Arkansas

Beta Kappa (University of Arkansas-Little Rock)

Gerald Scott Patton, 2005, was recently selected to represent the Air Force and attend Naval War College in Newport, R.I., for Senior Development Education. He was the Air Force Sustainment Center’s Senior Officer Nominee for the Lance P. Sijan Leadership Award 2023.

California

Alpha Delta (University of Southern California)

The USC Marshall School of Business recently featured a ZBT young alumnus.

“My experience as an entrepreneur has been a practical extension of USC’s emphasis on ethical and adaptive leadership, demonstrating the direct impact of Marshall’s teachings on my professional endeavors,” said Dalen L. Michaels, 2023.

This past May, Brother Michaels graduated with a major in business administration and a concentration in entrepreneurship. During his time at the university, he was an active member in the American Marketing Association, where he had the opportunity to turn Outheback into a collaborative project for the group, gaining fresh marketing ideas while providing students with real-world client experience.⁠

Post-graduation, he joined his family’s business, Hairmax delving into product development and marketing within the medical devices field. Dalen then applied his insights to launch Outheback, an apparel company focused on sustainable surfing gear: “Attending USC Marshall was a major catalyst in my entrepreneurial journey. The hands-on business lessons and real-world case studies provided a solid foundation for understanding the nuts and bolts of running a company. The environment at Marshall and being surrounded by ambitious peers and experienced professors really fueled my drive and is where I transformed from a student into an entrepreneur.”⁠

Alpha Rho (University of California-Los Angeles)

David S. Wax, 1977, is the president of JCC Association of North America and a longtime supporter of the JCC Maccabi Games. This summer he traveled to Israel for the games, where he connected with Brother Tal Brody, Rho (University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign) 1965, Israel’s Ambassador of Goodwill and inductee of the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. Brother Brody captained the Maccabi Tel-Aviv team that won Israel’s first European Basketball Championship

Iota (University of Denver)

Everett Anton “Tony” Singer, 1970, has invested meaningful educational experiences for future students through a legacy gift establishing the Everett Anton Singer Endowed Professorship in Art in DU’s College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Painting was the initial focus of this brother  upon arriving at the University of Denver, but his interests broadened during his time at DU. Through classes in interior design, sculpture, painting, and more, he soon discovered an array of artistic talents that prepared him for a dynamic career in his family’s printing business. Norman B. Porges, 1964, and his son, Evan, were recipients of honorary doctorates from California State University – Stanislaus on May 25 by the university’s president. Norman and Evan Porges have been actively involved for years in promoting business student success, hiring students, being donors and more. About 30 years ago, Brother Porges began an ecologically sensitive car wash business in Modesto, California, that grew to about 25 locations in central California. It was known as PrimeShine Car Wash. Evan became president as Norman stepped down. Norman and Evan became more involved in regional government and higher education endeavors. Norman recently sold the chain of car washes. They are both now fully retired and fully devoted to doing public service. Norman’s biological brother is also an Iota ZBT, Edward N. (Ned) Porges, Ed.D., 1962.

Florida

Alpha Omega (University of Miami)

Seth Levine, CPA, Ed.D., 1984, was the 2022-2023 recipient for the Teaching Award for Full Time Lecturer / Clinical Track Faculty at Miami. He is Senior Lecturer, Accounting, at the Herbert School of Business, who posted online: “We are so thankful for his commitment to the UM Accounting Department and his passion for teaching and mentoring our students!” Brother Levine is a Supreme Councilor for Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity as well as a volunteer in Miami and with the Alpha Omega Chapter.

Delta Omicron (University of Tampa)

Joey N. Pawlan, 2015, was married to Sara in November in a ceremony in Tampa, where the couple resides. Brother Robert F. (Bobby) Smith, 2017, was in attendance alongside friend of the Delta Omicron Chapter Sommer SanFilippo.

Robert F. (Bobby) Smith, 2017, was the recipient of ZBT’s 2023 Outstanding Young Alumnus Award. This award is given to an alumnus who has graduated within the last 20 years and has made an impact in his community and lives the ideals expressed within the Credo and Ritual of Zeta Beta Tau. He’s currently a Chapter Advisor to two groups and he’s a consistent international volunteer, serving on faculty at programs including the James E. Greer, Jr. Presidents’ Leadership Academy and sharing his expertise with multiple Fraternity and Zeta Beta Tau Foundation committees. He recently was appointed as a liaison to the Supreme Council. His work revitalizing the New York Area Alumni Association has had an important impact on the Fraternity. The Association is one of the strongest in the ZBT alumni realm currently and it’s due in large part to the personal drive of this brother. Brother Smith received the award on August 12 at the Grand Awards Banquet celebrated as part of ZBT’s 2023 International Convention in New York City.

On May 7 at Mohonk Mountain, Joseph D. Lauro, 2002, asked his girlfriend Victoria to marry him — and she said yes!

Beta Delta (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey)

Beta Delta’s 2022-2023 president won Chapter President of the Year among Interfraternity Council groups before he graduated this May. Dennis W. Specht, 2023, is very deserving. Chapter advisors said he is a great brother and leader and was a great support to the Chapter during the pandemic, which was very tough for college campuses. Congratulations, Brother Specht.

New York

Kappa (Cornell University)

David I. Burrows, 1991, was named ZBT’s Maxwell Hyman Chapter Advisor Award for Most Outstanding Chapter Advisor in 2023. Brother Burrows has been an advisor to one of ZBT’s oldest chapters for almost 10 years. This group has a big presence on campus and in Zeta Beta Tau, and his work in supporting the longevity and strength of the chapter and the individual brothers is worthy of recognition. He plays a very active role in supporting all facets of the Chapter. This honor was celebrated August 12 at 2023 International Convention in New York City.

Larry C. Segall, 1967, is doing well and his family is growing. He and wife, Sherri, have two daughters and welcomed their first grandson. They are based out of Connecticut. Past International President Kenneth L. Simon, 1975, and his wife Linda, a former Zeta Beta Tau Foundation Director and longtime ZBT volunteer, met up with former ZBT staffer Brother Matthew I. South Carolina

Alpha Theta (University of South Carolina)

Richard C. Litwin, Esq., 1984, specializes in state and local taxation and tax disputes, including sales and use tax, multistate corporate income tax, personal income tax, state residency and local business occupation tax. Brother Litwin is a Fellow, American College of Tax Counsel.  He is a Georgia Super Lawyer in tax, since 2008, and is a top 100 Georgia Super Lawyer, regardless of specialty, for 2011, 2012, 2021 and 2022. He is listed, with other attorneys across the country, in U.S. News and World Report’s The Best Lawyers in America, for Litigation and Controversy – Tax.  In 2021, Litwin was recognized as The Best Lawyers In America  “Lawyer of the Year” for Metro Atlanta and in the category “Litigation and Controversy – Tax Law.”

Brother  Litwin is Co-Moderator of the Georgia Department of Revenue Attorney Liaison Committee, which meets annually, to address current issues relating to the Georgia DOR. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the National Association of State Bar Tax Sections. Brother Litwin has served as Chairperson of the State Bar of Georgia Section of Taxation and the Atlanta Bar Association Taxation Section.

Brother Litwin serves as a volunteer tax lawyer with Pro Bono Partnership of Atlanta and other local organizations. For 2019, Pro Bono Partnership of Atlanta recognized him as a “Volunteer of the Year.”

He speaks frequently on state and local tax topics, at national and state bar seminars. He has also published articles on various aspects of state taxation.

Brother Litwin graduated from the University of South Carolina, with a bachelor’s degree, cum laude, in economics, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.  He graduated from Emory Law School.  From September 2016 through August 2022, Brother Litwin served as an at-large member of the USC Board of Visitors.

Texas

Lambda (University of Texas)

Dallas philanthropists Todd S. Aaron, 1984, and Dawn Aaron have made a substantial gift that will have a transformational impact at the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies and the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin. Brother Aaron also serves as a valuable member of the Schusterman Center’s advisory board. Their three children – Morgan, Bennett and Molly – have followed in their parents’ footsteps by attending UT.

Virginia

Phi Epsilon (University of Virginia)

Ryan P. Woloshin, 2013, has joined the Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity staff as Director of Chapter Support & Accountability. Brother Woloshin has a master’s degree from the Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program at Brandeis University, where he focused his research on American Antisemitism and Jewish Identity.
